Suffolk

Things to do

Suffolk is full of places to explore, from coastal towns and countryside walks to historic sites and local food spots. Whether you’re staying in Woodbridge or heading further afield, there’s plenty to see and do at a relaxed pace. You’ll find quiet beaches, lively markets, nature reserves, and towns with rich history and character—all within easy reach.

Framlingham Castle

A short drive from Woodbridge, Framlingham Castle is a 12th-century fortress with a rich history. Best known as the place where Mary Tudor was declared Queen, it’s now run by English Heritage. You can walk along the high curtain wall for wide views over the surrounding countryside and learn about the castle’s role in Tudor politics.

Beach towns

Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh is a coastal town about half an hour’s drive from Woodbridge, known for its pebble beach, fresh seafood, and strong arts heritage. Once a busy fishing port, it’s now a quiet seaside spot with independent shops, galleries, and cafés. You’ll find the famous Scallop sculpture by Maggi Hambling on the beach, a tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, who lived here. It’s a good place for a walk along the coast, fish and chips on the seafront, or a visit to the historic Moot Hall.

Southwold

Southwold is a classic Suffolk seaside town, about an hour’s drive from Woodbridge. It’s known for its colourful beach huts, working lighthouse, and sandy beach. The town has a relaxed feel, with local pubs, cafés, and the Adnams Brewery at its heart. You can walk along the pier, explore the high street’s independent shops, or take a stroll along the coast towards Walberswick. It’s a good spot for a day out by the sea.

Felixstowe

Felixstowe sits where the River Orwell meets the North Sea, around 30 minutes from Woodbridge. It has a long stretch of beach, a traditional seafront promenade, and a mix of old and new—from Victorian gardens and beach huts to the busy container port further along the coast. There’s a nature reserve at Landguard Point, a small fort, and ferries across the Deben to Bawdsey in the summer months. It’s a laid-back place for a walk, an ice cream, or a visit to the sea.
