Tide Mill

Woodbridge Tide Mill was first recorded as a working mill in 1170 when it was owned by Augustine Priors. It is one of the few remaining fully working tide mills in the UK and is a fascinating and remarkable living example of our industrial and cultural heritage.

St Mary's Church

A landmark since the 15th century, St Mary’s is known for its ornate flintwork and rare double hammerbeam roof. Inside, you’ll find carved pews and memorials, including one to Thomas Seckford. The church remains a hub for services, music, and community events.

Woodbridge Museum

Woodbridge Museum offers a compact but fascinating look at the town’s past—from shipbuilding and the Deben wharf trade to the life of local poet Edward FitzGerald. A great stop for anyone curious about the stories behind the town.

Shire Hall

Standing at the top of Market Hill, the Shire Hall has been part of Woodbridge since 1575. Once used for town meetings and magistrates’ courts, it’s a striking example of Tudor architecture and a central piece of the town’s civic history.

Riverside Theatre

A small, volunteer-run theatre showing a mix of films, live performances, and community events. It’s a friendly space with a local feel, just by the river, and a good spot for an evening out in town.

Whisstocks place

Once a working boatyard, Whisstocks is now a modern riverside square close to the Tide Mill. It’s home to the Longshed community space, small exhibitions, and local events throughout the year. You’ll also find a café with river views, a popular pizza place, and a games shop—making it a nice spot to stop and take in the surroundings.

Thouroughfare

Woodbridge’s main shopping street, lined with independent shops, cafés, and historic buildings. It’s a good place for a relaxed wander, picking up local goods, or stopping for coffee.

Birdwatching

The idyllic countryside around Woodbridge is ideal for those who love birdwatching. By far the easiest are the trails to the north and south along the River Deben.

RSPB Havergate Island (30 minutes from Woodbridge)

Access is only possible on the RSPB boat, October Storm, which departs Orford Quay on the first Saturday each month except May, June and July. Numbers are strictly limited so advance booking is essential by calling 01728 688959.

RSPB North Warren (30 minutes from Woodbridge)

For great hiking or bird watching, the RSPB North Warren reserve near Aldeburgh  is a fantastic and easily accessible getaway. Public footpaths lead you through a wide variety of habitats within a relatively small area. Access to North Warren is free and dogs are welcome, but please keep them under close control and remain on the paths.

RSPB Minsmere (40 minutes from Woodbridge)

There’s a choice of countryside walks through stunning coastal, wetland, woodland and heathland scenery, and various hides where you can sit and relax as you watch the wide variety of wildlife. Volunteer guides are often on hand to help, or, book a guided walk before you visit.

Walks and Hikes

Woodbridge is a great place for walking, with plenty of footpaths that take you along the River Deben, through nearby woods, and out into the surrounding countryside. The river is just a few minutes from The Bull Inn and is the starting point for several peaceful and scenic routes. Whether you're heading out for half an hour or most of the day, there are lots of options to explore at your own pace.

River Deben

Start from the centre of Woodbridge and follow the river south towards Kyson Hill, a grassy rise with sweeping views over the Deben’s tidal mudflats and saltings. The area is great for birdwatching—look out for egrets, plovers, teals, and curlews. Continue along Martlesham Creek for a longer walk that eventually leads to Felixstowe Ferry. The River Deben is part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, making this route as scenic as it is peaceful.

Sutton Hoo

Explore the 255-acre estate of this world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial site, located just across the River Deben from Woodbridge. Head north along the river past Melton and cross at Wilford Bridge to reach the site and its National Trust museum. The walk offers beautiful river views and a mix of woodland and open landscape.

Fynn Valley Walk

This peaceful trail follows the River Fynn from Witnesham to Woodbridge, passing through quiet countryside and small villages. It’s also possible to join the trail from Woodbridge and head west to Playford for a rural escape just beyond the town.

Rendlesham Forest

Just east of Woodbridge, Rendlesham Forest is best known for its UFO trail, based on the famous 1980 sighting. Beyond the mystery, it’s a great spot for walking and cycling, with waymarked trails through pine woods and heathland.

East Suffolk Line Walks

These walks follow the path of the East Suffolk railway line from Ipswich to Lowestoft. The Woodbridge section offers a gentle way to explore the Suffolk countryside, connecting towns and villages through quiet lanes, farmland, and wooded areas.
