HG Benwell

About

Horace George Benwell was the landlord of The Bull from 1937 to 1939 along with his wife Nellie (nee Whitbread) (29 Dec 1897 – 8 Oct 1969). They were married at the Registrar Office in Woodbridge on 20th March1918 and their son Keith was born a year later in 1919.

During the first world war, Horace served in the Royal Flying Corp (RAF) as an aircraft rigger and was promoted to a mechanic during his service. Horace’s brother, Edward, also served in the first world war and unfortunately died in France in 1918

He then served his country again working at Martlesham Airfield during the second world war.

We have a few photos of Keith with the Head Chef at the time, Alec “Harry” Holmes.
Alec enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps in 1914 at the age of 16. At the end of the first world war, Alec was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Horace and Nellie have a plaque in Woodbridge cemetery – reunited one last time having been married for over 58 years.
